How to test a pillow for ear pressure, properly
Every verdict on this site is limited by how it was gathered, and the honest fix is not a better-sounding claim — it is more testers following the same steps. This is the log the site wants back. It is also, on its own, the thing no reviewer publishes: a repeatable method for a problem that only shows up hours into the night.
Before you start
- Measure your neck-to-shoulder distance and note your mattress firmness. Without these, your result cannot be compared to anyone else's, because required loft differs per body.
- Note exactly what goes in your ear, including the model. A stem that protrudes 4 mm and one that protrudes 9 mm are not the same test.
- Write down the pillow you are replacing. A comparison without a named baseline is an opinion.
The test
- Sleep on it as you normally would, on your usual mattress, with the usual thing in your ear.
- Judge nothing for the first three nights. A correct pillow can feel worse than a wrong one you had adapted to, and this is the single most common reason a good pillow gets returned early.
- From night four, record each morning: any ear soreness (none / mild / woke you), any neck ache, and whether you found yourself removing the object in the night.
- Run it fourteen nights. Ear pressure injuries build over hours and repeat over nights; a two-night trial measures novelty, not fit.
The three-night rule is the one people skip. A pillow at the correct loft
can feel worse than the wrong one you had adapted to, and that is the most common reason a good
pillow goes back inside a week. It is also why a 14-night return window and a 100-night one are not
the same product risk — see the trial column.
What makes a result usable to anyone else
- The tester's measurement and mattress firmness, so a reader can tell whether it transfers.
- The named baseline it was compared against.
- The number of nights before the judgement.
- The exact object in the ear, by model.
Record those four for yourself and you will know whether a pillow worked for reasons that transfer, or whether you got lucky. They are the same four this site's own headline verdict is missing, and it says so on its page rather than filling them in.
There is no submission channel yet. When one exists it will be linked here, and not before — a page about how evidence should be gathered is the last place to put a button that goes nowhere.
This site's own headline verdict is missing the first three of those four, and says so on its page rather than quietly filling them in.
